Slow Cookers - What to Watch For

We're in the market for a slow cooker.
(Yeah, I still call all of them crock-pots, truth be told.)

Good Housekeeping did an interesting review of slow cookers.
Looking at their Top 7 list, their Top Pick was the All-Clad 6.5 Quart Electric Slow Cooker with Ceramic Insert.

Now I loves me some All-Clad.
Don't get me wrong.
But, at $180 it had better make flank steak taste like Porterhouse.

Edited to Add (10/31/11):
There used to be a bunch of info here on models
Good Housekeeping listed as "Not Recommended."
However, GH contacted me, stating:

" 'Since we tested slow cookers in 2008, we have updated our testing procedures. The changes were based on conversations with government and industry representatives. In view of our new methodology, we revised our standards of acceptability and can no longer say with certainty that specific slow cookers that were evaluated using our previous test methods are unsafe and therefore not recommended.'

As a result, we’re no longer listing the slow cookers from that test as being not recommended."

They provided a list of Good Housekeeping's updated recommendations.

Yep, the All-Clad is still #1. ;)

We almost didn't even get a slow cooker - we use our huge Le Creuset to do all out braising after work. But, I think it would be kinda nice to put some of the same things in the crock-pot, er, slow-cooker, head out to the zoo, and come back to a nice braised meal.

Do you like your slow cooker?
Do you hate yours?

Let me tell you a story about how we came upon the slow cooker that we own.

Once upon a time, there was a girl who thought she could hold on to a slow cooker full of mulled cider two Christmases ago while driving to a Christmas Party. She would've made it, too, had her husband not slammed on the brakes for no readily apparent reason (the fact that he was about to run a VERY yellow light and there were two policemen at the corner wasn't a good enough reason, in her opinion).

The slow cooker went to the floor, emptying out all her hard work from the day, onto husband's 3 month old car.

Needless to say, I was not pleased with him. at. all. We had no gift to take with us the party now.

The fact that he was REALLY hacked at me for messing up his car haunts us still, to this day, on certain hot days when he still can get a whiff of cinnamon & allspice when he opens the car door, even though we've cleaned it oh so many times.

Thus, we have that locking slow cooker now.
