Featured Artist Friday: Interview and Earth Day GIVEAWAY from La Alicia!

Welcome to our next installment of

Featured Artist Friday!

Happy Earth Day!
(In her best Riddler voice...
"Riddle-me this, Batman!")

What's green, water-resistant, and hails from the great state of Texas?
Today's artist! (And, luckily for us, most of the items in her shop!)
Today our artist is Alicia Colina-Ashby who owns the fabulous Etsy shop La Alicia.

Cute right?
What if I told you they are made from paper? Sometimes it's even Junk Mail! Talk about "green!"

Wanna know more? I did, too!
So, I set up an interview. Enjoy!

Alicia, How did you get started with paper folding?
Were you the kid in class always folding up her candy wrappers?

When I was little, my mom and I made origami animals to put on the Christmas tree one year. We both totally enjoyed it and made other origami on occasion. Later on, a friend of my grandmother's taught me how to fold gum wrappers (which are no longer printed, btw) and I loved making the colorful, scented Double Mint gum wrapper chains.

To this day, when I unwrap a straw, I HAVE to fold the straw paper into a little bow. I don't really think about it -- it just happens. Some people knit or crochet to relax -- I fold paper.
Oh my! Those bobby pins are made from a red "security envelope?!" Too cute!
Is most of your work for others? Or, do you feature some of your work in your own home, too?

When I started out most things I made were experimental and just for my home.
Three years later, almost everything I make is for others.
I'm continually amazed with all the colors and textures paper.

Can I just tell you, I love your subtle sense of humor -
• Water Resistant
• Not made for snorkeling or showering

Speaking of water, your coin purses are VERY nice.
Understanding that this is a paper product, what can we expect in terms of wear?

No foolin', my bags wear really well. They are made up of many layers of paper and then have two coats of water based sealer applied to them. I have a bag that I have been carrying regularly for two years and the only change in the bag as it has aged, is a little softening on the corners where it bumps into things.

Those adjustable rings are darling!
If I had a little girl's birthday party coming up they might be perfect for party favors.
Could I choose custom colors or theme, e.g. "The Mouse?"

Of course! If there is a special paper you have that you'd like me to use to make them, I can do that too!

Where is your "studio?"
Do you have stacks and stacks of junk mail at the waiting?
(Can I send you mine!! Heck, can I SELL you mine - lol!)

You're too funny!
I live in a one bedroom apartment and when I first moved in, my studio was the dining room. I quickly outgrew that space and now the bedroom is my studio and I sleep in the dining room. It works out very well. It's a little nontraditional but I'm ok with that!

I have a good supply of paper, at the moment, thanks to friends and other "greenies". Twice a year I will put out an email asking for people's unwanted paper and I am always overwhelmed and grateful with the paper that people are willing to give. If you're interested in lessening the junk mail that arrives in your mailbox, you can visit http://www.the-dma.org/index.php and click on the green icon in the upper left to remove yourself from many mailing lists.
And, those Eco-Chic ornaments made from reclaimed text book paper look to be the perfect Christmas gift for teachers. Could we contact you for a custom order for multiples - since kids have LOTS of teachers?

Yes, they are great for teachers, librarians and fellow book worms! I usually use all different kinds of books that I find damaged. I'm happy to do orders with multiples or custom sets and papers, just ask.

That Eco-Chic (love that description!) Music Garland has me signing a happy tune!
Actually, it has me thinking about warm memories - and maybe thoughts of stringing that near a Christmas tree. And, of course again - perfect music teacher gift.

What is the most sentimental piece you've created?

I actually created a really cool little evening bag for my mom from one of her favorite college design books. It has a woven linen handle and I'll be putting it in the mail to her for Mother's Day.

Shhh, don't ruin the surprise!

Other sentimental pieces I love to work on are keepsake bags using all the maps from a couple's honeymoon. Those are so much fun to work on. I've also made itty bitty bags from wrapping paper from wedding and baby showers. It's amazing how sentimental we find certain kinds of paper.

Speaking of weddings, my husband and I are newlyweds.
How special would it be to have a map of Arizona - where we spent our honeymoon - made into a little mini clutch like the one above! Very fun!

What's the most oddly shaped object you've created?
Did it have curves and corners to work around?

LOL! Hands down, the most odd shaped thing so far has been a lampshade.
The bell shape presented an unusual challenge and since it is really large -- the weight of the paper compounded quickly practically tipping over the lamp. I had to back track and figure out how to make the lampshade lighter -- that was definitely a case of trial and error!

Transparency: From Chickens to Check-ups
(Last day for GIVEAWAY!)

Heads up - our GIVEAWAY ENDS TONIGHT!

Transparency.
We talk about "being transparent" in our relationships.

Being real. Showing our weaknesses and sharing our aspirations and plans for growth to those who we trust and have valued relationships with. (Yeah, that sentence isn't grammatically correct. Just being transparent...lol)

Recently there's been a lot of talk about transparency in our *business* relationships, too.

I follow Seth Godin's blog and I found today's topic of physician and farmer transparency very interesting.
From chickens to check-ups...okay, I'll stop now. ;)

In case you don't follow him...thought I'd pass the link along.
Enjoy your weekend!

Got It In the Bag!

First, there's still time to enter this week's Featured Friday Artist GIVEAWAY!

According to Chicago's ABC 7 News:

"You may soon notice some changes if you shop at Jewel-Osco.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, baggers are being trained to stop double-bagging. The goal is to save money.

Employees will also be trained to stop bagging an item with a handle, for instance, milk jugs, and never ask, "Paper or plastic?" because paper bags are more expensive."

For those of you outside of Chicagoland, this may or may not apply to stores with the same parent-chain, specifically: Albertson's, Shaws, Acme, Cub, and other SuperValu-owned stores.

So, I'm wondering...
Do you have a paper-plastic preference?
Do you bring your own bags?

If you use plastic, do you recycle them?
Drop them back at the store? Use them for household tasks like packing an on-the-fly lunch or using them in your waste-basket?

Paper users - What do you do with your left-over bags?

You Think You Know. But Do You?

You think you know, but do you?

I challenge you.

Grab your coffee, tea or milk and ...
take an 18 minute break.

18 minutes.
Such a small amount of time.
Do it for those you love.

If the embed above fails, click here.

She's such a captivating speaker - and I love that she can conceptualize the business models using her MBA and years of experience and yet focus on the high points to that we can comprehend the ramifications in less than 20 min. To those of us who have been following changes in the food industry - this is familiar. But, her style is compelling.

I ask you:
Is this important knowledge to have?
Can we make this video viral?
Should we try?

Featured Artist Friday: (GIVEAWAY!) Rustic Easter Baskets

Welcome to another installment of...

Featured Artist Friday!

Now, I don't know about you, but right now it seems I'm swamped...
There's just so much going on.

Today, I'm taking it easy on myself.
And, we're giving you...a treat from our own shop!

Can you say...GIVEAWAY?

Does your home have it's own Easter Basket?
A little something cheery - or in this case CHERRY! - to brighten things up?

The one below is our "Tuscon Sunset."
The deep purples, magentas, golds and greens of this assortment remind us of our honeymoon.

Sure, we COULD have called it Tuscan Sunset...
but we honeymooned in Arizona, not Italy!

Our family takes nature pretty seriously.
We're always walking through the zoo, or the local arboretum. Other days we hike through the woods or go camping. We're always on the lookout for nature to bring home. Fallen pine cones and acorns, large pieces of bark (salvaged from the ground - never taken from trees), or bizarre seed pods find their way home with us.

Sometimes we combine things in a way that is colorful!

Sometimes rustic golds and browns feel more at home.

(I have to admit, I think golds and browns are my favorite!)

Sometimes they live in bowls or vases.  Sometimes charger plates.
Other times they wind up in vintage cheese boxes.
No matter what -  they make us smile.

This week - we want to share that smile with you!

This week...we are giving away our
"Northwoods Easter Basket!"
Shown below.

This assortment includes some found objects collected by my family in the woods of Illinois.
I love the way the bark is completely different on each side so you have twice the display choices.
Wanna see the dark side of the bark?

Cool, huh?
The metal basket and everything you see is included.
A home-dried lemon slice, bark, gourd, flowers, petals, and...thingamabobs– the technical term *wink*

Springtime! Bringing the Outdoors - In!

This post brought to you by Pier 1. All opinions are 100% mine.

Pier 1 Settee

Are you excited about Spring?  I am!
I've been paging through the latest Pier 1 catalog - and dreaming.

You see that settee above?
Well, I can see that in my back yard.  Lemonade on the table.  Maybe some snacks.

Honestly, I like that settee enough to have it in my living room.  Seriously.  Before I was married my living room was decorated in the English Cottage style.  Potted plants, flowered china - and that settee would have been perfect!

Pier 1 Swingasan

Everything old is new again!
I guess it's true - because my mom had one of those "Swingasan chairs" in her living room!
No kidding!  She would sit in it - looking out the window - and write poetry.
So, no matter what the Chicago weather had in store that day, she could feel like a kid in her own swing.

 Colorful Pier 1 Pillows

Mom had that papasan char, too, of course.  But, hers wasn't that cool rainbow color.
I remember how fun it was to crawl up in the papasan chair.

It was filled with pillows and so easy to just snuggle up and fall asleep.
That's a pretty fun memory :)
Now, I really like these lanterns!

 Pier 1 Lanterns

Oh, my! Those would look perfect sitting on our porch.
Or, next to our bench out front.  Wow!  The coolest thing?  While we could use these for our Spring and Summer time parties, they would be PERFECT in the Fall and Winter times, INDOORS!  We have have a rustic decor thing going on and I think these would fit great!

Okay, enough about me! What about you?
Dream a little dream with me...
What do you see at Pier 1 that would fit your outdoor living OR INDOOR!
What would your dream backyard look like?  (Or, is it your front yard, side yard?)  Tell us!

And, don't miss the Pier 1 Tweetups coming soon!
