A Very Nice "Win-Win..." and College Costs.

In "these economic times..."
Can there really still be a win-win?

Quite possibly.

Let me ask you...

Are you trying to reduce costs for college?
Does a picture REALLY tell a thousand words?

How many words is a video worth?

Take that answer... and multiply that by 2.

I have 2 videos for you.

Both are short.
Both may make a difference in your day.

So, what's the connection?

So for EVERY book rented starting now,
they will donate a portion of those proceeds to Operation Smile.

They have committed to donating enough
to cover a minimum of 1,000 life changing surgeries.
They hope to beat that number, but it's a significant commitment.

This weekend I was blessed to see my step-son walk across the stage.
 He shook the principal's hand and received his 8th grade diploma.

 Then he turned... and smiled into the camera.
 What a happy smile it was.

What's Up, Buttercup?

Isn't this cute?

Yeah, this is sponsored post. But, I've wanted a Butter Bell for so long. I even put it on my wedding registry.  Sadly, still don't have one - though that won't be for long.

You see the Butter Bell folks - a family owned company -
are offering a special and I think I'll get in on the deal.

Honestly, the first time I saw a Butter Bell...
 I had no idea what it was.
 Here's how it works.

They have a special offer going right now, too.
Buy 2 and get one of their classic designs with the french country blue lettering free.

Do you keep your butter...
On the counter?
In the fridge?

Have you ever heard of the Butter Bell?
I think I would like the yellow one.  Or, the red. Or, the blue...
How about you?

This sponsorship is brought to you by The Butter Bell Crock
who we have partnered with for this promotion.

There, I Said It. "Pin it" - If You Must.

DIY Inexpensive artwork
Inexpensive artwork.

Maybe you're looking for a Mother's Day gift.
Or, you're styling a nursery  - and money doesn't grow on trees.
Perhaps money is no object...
But you love DIY.

artwork. doesn't have to be expensive.

Yep - I said it.
It's there in black and white - er, green.
You can go ahead and "pin it" on an inspiration board now.
Or an "eyeroll" board - if that's your pleasure.

DIY rustic artwork is something I love - which is good because DIY is in my budget.

"Our Bedroom" Pinterest board is chalk full of rustic DIY-ness.
(I tried containing it in our "Rustic Art Inspiration" board...but it escaped.)

Oh, well.
 Art, can't be contained.
(You can pin that little bit of inspiration, too. LOL)

DIY inexpensive rustic artwork tree

Isn't that rustic tree adorable?  *swoon*

It's always amazing to me - how pretty & simple repetition can be.
Take the painting below.

Step 1.
Simple lines for twigs.
Dots in white, cream, gray, yellow.
Leaf here and there.

Step 2.
Let dry.

Step 3.
Head to you local Hobby Lobby to mat and frame it.
(Even better, skip the mat then re-use a frame you bought at a  resale shop or yard sale.)

DIY inexpensive artwork simple

Now, I'm not silly enough to think that my artwork
will be all balanced,
have flow and movement,
texture,
and...
admittedly...(sigh)
I've already exhausted my Freshman year art survey vocab.

Heck, I'm not Zoe at Dear Chicago House. (<-- great gal, btw)
But, it's okay.
Because while I do have critics,
they know how to embrace the imperfect.

Have you made your own artwork?
Would you like to?
What would it look like?

Did We Really? D'oh!

jack bauer netflix 24 keifer sutherland
What does Jack Bauer eat to keep up his energy?
A Bauer Bar.  (sorry.)

We are re-watching 24 on Netflix.
Well, I'm re-watching it.
My husband is watching for the first time.

You should know...
He gets home from work at 10 p.m. so sometimes we're falling asleep while watching.

(Yeah, 10 p.m. Ugh. living on 2 different shifts...can be a challenge.)

Anyways...
So, if you've ever watched 24 you know that is can sometimes move slowly.  Very slowly.  And, yet other times you get introduced to a bazillion new characters - only to find that you really only need to know the name of one who will be sticking around  - because all of the others don't even make it to the commercial break.

We were in episode 9.
We watched the previous episode very late the night prior.  Episode 9...made no sense.  Well, it sorta did.  Some things were kinda familiar.  The scenes in the  "Previously on..." recap rang a bell. We shrugged and pushed on - thinking we had just fallen asleep.

Last night we started season 2.
And, we happened to see that Season 1 had each of its 24 episodes underlined in red - indicating they had been watched.  All of them...

Except for one...
Apparently we had skipped episode 8.

Allow me to amend.
I guess we're re-watching 23.

~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~
Have you caught up on anything worth watching lately?
What do you recommend?
Perfectly Grilled Asparagus
 We love asparagus.
I used to work the grill in a busy kitchen.
 One of our all-time hits was...asparagus.
For the entire service I would put it on and take it off the grill.
Order after order  - that's what the customers wanted.
What was our secret?
1. Hot grill. Low flames.  (No one likes the taste of soot.)
2. In a flat bottomed pan (13x9 or loaf pan is fine), roll the asparagus in a 1/8 of an inch of olive oil.
3. Place on grill. Salt them.  (You can use a lemon pepper or steak seasoning, if you wish.)
4.  Roll them with tongs once to turn.
5. Remove them before the tips are cooked and wilted. (They will continue to cook on the plate.)
If you wish, you can give a give them a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime when you plate them.  Salt and pepper is usaully enough. Of course, you can also serve them with avgolemono sauce. (Use the soup technique, scaled down, skipping the orzo.)
A big thank you to Chef Jodi for keeping recipes simple, fresh...and tasty!
Avgolemono Soup (Greek Egg and Lemon Soup)
Easy Greek Lemon Chicken Soup Avgolemono recipe
I'm not really sure why I've been on such a soup kick lately - but my family isn't complaining.
I'm just going to break down and admit that this blog lately...has been a bit soupified.
And, according to Soup-makers Anonymous,
I must admit that I am powerless.
I am.
And, so I have created a new category called Soup-A-Licious.
I'm embracing my inner Saltine-loving self.
At least till the warm weather hits.
~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~

Avgolemono
Greek Egg and Lemon Soup

Around here, if you ask your server what the soups are in a Greek restaurant,
you are likely to hear "Two soups - avgolemono and lentil."

The lentil she speaks of would be fakes, but she'll just stick with the word lentil.
(After all, who wants to say "fakes" to a customer.
Too much room for misunderstanding that two-syllable word.)

If you ask her what the other soup was,(the avgolemono),
chances are good she will just say, "Cream of Chicken with Rice."

Want to know a secret?
Take a gander at the soup above.
Not a drop of cream in there.  (Nor, milk for that matter.)
And, no rice - it's orzo pasta.

Today's soup is a based on 2 similar recipes. Oh, and a blog comment.The first recipe is from Organically Cooked. The second is from Serious Eats. Both wonderful sites.

And, thank you to a commenter on Organically Cooked, named Mariza, who said, "My dad used to whisk the eggs, the whites first until well beaten, then the yolks and last went the lemon. The more you whisk the whites the thicker becomes the soup." That's the technique I used.

Avgolemono Soup
Takes about 30 minutes
Serves 4

8 cups chicken stock
1 cup orzo pasta, (or rice)
3 eggs, separated (Use pasteurized eggs, if you wish)
Juice of 3 lemons
Freshly ground black pepper

Have your egg yolks, waiting in a small bowl. Have your lemon juice waiting in a second small bowl.  Have your egg whites waiting in a medium bowl.

Bring stock to a boil and add orzo or rice. Simmer until tender - mine took about 12 minutes. Season stock to taste with salt.

While the orzo is cooking, lightly scramble the egg yolks and set aside.

When the orzo is nearing doneness -
In the medium bowl, beat the egg whites until they come to medium peaks.  Add the egg yolks, to the whites, whisking continuously.  Add the lemon juice, continuing to whisk.

When the orzo is ready, move the pot off the heat.

Temper the egg-lemon mixture by adding 2 cups of the hot stock  - add this very slowly in a constant stream while beating vigorously to prevent the eggs from cooking.  Add the beaten mixture back into the pot, whisking to combine. Serve immediately with freshly ground black pepper.

Have you ever had avgolemono soup?
Have you made it?
If you have a different technique, feel free to share it!
